COSTS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Fees
To determine your eligibility for fee payment, you need to consider the following 3 questions:
-
Do you hold an EU passport or an Irish Birth Certificate?
-
Do you have prior Third Level education?
-
Have you been living in the EU for three out of the last five years?
If you answered YES to each of these questions, you are not normally required to pay tuition fees for level 6, 7 & 8 courses. You will only have to pay the registration/non-tuition fee, unless you are eligible for a grant (see below) which means the registration/non-tuition fee will be also be waived.
Read more on Fees to determine if you are liable for fees and to see the fee rates.
Incidental Costs and Other Expenses
There may be some additional costs specific to your course. For example, if your study involves using a laboratory, you may need a lab coat & safety glasses. Or, if you take a course in the area of Art & Design, you will need to pay for some of the materials you use. Other expenses include rent, food, textbooks, transport, recreation, etc.
Maintenance Grant
Students who are entering grant-approved courses for the first time may be eligible for a maintenance grant if they satisfy the relevant conditions of their grant-awarding authority (i.e. local authority/VEC).
Detailed information on the range of grants in higher education and how to make an application can be found on studentfinance.ie or on GMIT's Grant Information Pages.
