GMIT celebrates 28 years of fund-raising for Galway Lions Club
Christmas 2007 marked the 25th year of GMIT's involvement with the Galway Lions Club. From making puddings to staging fashion shows, GMIT students have raised over Euro 138,000 for the charity's Christmas Club Food Appeal in that time, marking an average of Euro 5,500 per year.

Teresa Morgan, lecturer and Galway Lions Club remembers how it all started.

In 1982, Tom Kenny, who was then President of the Galway Lions Club, was having a much-needed glass of refreshment in a Galway hostelry when he was joined by a member of the Regional Technical College, a lecturer in the Hotel and Catering Management Department and neighbour of Kenny's, Donal Leavy, who quite casually asked if there was anything the students might do to help out on the Christmas Food Appeal. The following week he brought a small group of students into Kennys and said to Tom, "here's your committee" and so started the relationship between the two organisations.
