BACHELOR OF BUSINESS


Why Study Business?
This programme provides you with a broadly-based business education to assist you to work successfully in business. 

You will study a variety of business subjects and develop a general understandng of the administrative, economics, legal, and social environment within which business operates.  You will study the basics of business and get an insight into many business disciplines in years one and two. 

In year three you can specialise in Marketing, Human Resource Management, or Information Systems Management. 

There is a strong emphasis during the programme on practical business projects to develop the skills required by graduates in the workplace. 

(Students may apply to the Registrar for a Higher Certificate in Business after successfully completing two years of the programme.)

Programme Modules

Year 1

Mandatory: Financial Accounting, Cost & Management Accounting, Micro-Economics, Macro-economics, Computing and Information Systems, Business Communications, Business Maths, Irish Legal System, Management Principles and Business Environment, Learning to Learn
Electives: Language and Culture (Spanish, French, German, Gaeilge) or Effective English

Year 2

Mandatory: Principles of Marketing, Behavioural Science, Business Law, Business Information Systems, Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems
Electives: Quantitative Techniques, Management Accounting, Business Management, Selling Techniques, Internet Technology, Language and Culture (Spanish, French, German, Gaeilge)

Year 3

Mandatory: E-Business Information Systems, Enterprise Development, Financial Management, Operations Management, Enterprise Project, Intermediate Macroeconomics.
Streams: Human Resource Management: HRM2, Industrial Relations, Employment Law, Workplace Issues

Marketing: Market Research, Marketing Management, Retailing, Integrated Marketing Communications

Information Systems Management: Applications Development 1 and 2, Database Management Systems 1 and 2

Electives: Project Management, Consumer Behaviour, Computerised Accountancy and Payroll, Event Management, Financial Analysis, E-commerce, Language and Culture (Gaeilge, German, French, or Spanish)


Career Opportunities

Most business graduates work in industrial and commercial enterprises in the accounting, financial services, marketing, and administrative sectors. Some work with professionals in practice and proceed to membership of a relevant professional body.

Other Essential Information
It is not necessary to have studied any business subject previously to pursue this programme.

Students who wish to specialise in accounting, and who successfully complete the first two years of this programme (including specified accounting modules) may apply to transfer to year two of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Accounting programme.

Students also have the option of studying in one of our European or American partner colleges for one semester or one academic year.

Follow-on Studies
Graduates can transfer to Bachelor and Bachelor (Honours) degree programmes at GMIT or at other colleges or universities in Ireland and abroad.  Such transfers are dependent on results and on comparability of programme.  Linkages with EU and US colleges also open up exciting possibilities for further study.

Students who specialise in Information Systems Management during this programme are also eligible to transfer to GMIT's Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Information Management Systems.
