Business and Marketing - Sam O'Neill
Originally from Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, Sam is now working for the Irish Heart Foundation.
After having a chat with one of his friends about studying at GMIT, Sam enrolled in the Bachelor of Business, Specialising in Marketing in 2011.
Something that appealed to Sam, and plenty of other students at GMIT, was the fact that he got to do a variety of subjects in different fields before choosing which area he wanted to specialise in.
"I particularly liked the hands on module where you could put into practice what you had learned in the lectures. The best example of this was Enterprise Development. Although it was challenging, it was a fantastic experience."
Sam took to college like a duck to water, and enjoyed every minute of his GMIT experience. He took advantage of getting involved wherever he could and made the most of his time in Galway as a student, loving the small community feel the college has to offer.
"Although I did not join any clubs or societies, I was elected class rep, and this led to directly to the Students Union which I went on to be President of, elected by over 1600 students across five campuses."
Sam is a big believer in slow and steady wins the race. A year before he enrolled in GMIT, Sam had accepted a course at another college but dropped out very fast and worked at home in a bar for a year. This was one of the best decisions he made, as he gave himself time to grow up doing his year out of college, saved up a bit of money and enrolled in GMIT one year older, and wiser.
"The fantastic thing about GMIT Galway campus is the location itself. Based on the outskirts of the city, there is anything and everything a student might want to do any day of the week. Galway is full of life, with activities and festivals going on all year round for everyone to enjoy. I have never met anyone who did not love Galway and after having lived here myself, all I can say is I would highly recommend it to everyone!"
Right now Sam is content to grow his career one step at a time. Not afraid of hard work, he is happy to progress at the rate he has been going at and will continue to work hard to get where he wants to be.
