Business - Ashlee Chin
Ashlee Chin is a Hong Kong native who now calls Galway her home.
Although Ashlee had found out about GMIT through research she did while attending her secondary school in Galway, she decided to study Business Administration for one year at the Irish International Hotel and Catering School. In 2011, with that certification and experience under her belt, she then enrolled in GMIT's Bachelor of Business (Hons) Specialising in Marketing course.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent at GMIT. Over the last four years I have had the nicest classmates and have met the nicest lecturers. It is fair to say my favourite module was Event Management. The great thing about the hands-on practical teaching style at GMIT is that we had to plan a 'real' event. We chose Console as our charity and held a 'Mob Masquerade Ball'. This was one of the highlights for me."
Although it was a hugely positive experience, Ashlee, like many other students found it a challenge to balance it all. Her college life overlapped with her work life and made it difficult to juggle volunteering and other projects, but she persevered and still managed to find time to join both the badminton and marketing societies.
Ashlee found the continuous assessment element of her course excellent. Being able to learn in class then put all that learning into practice was like having work experience.
Although the culture in Ireland differed greatly to her homeland, Ashlee enjoyed meeting students for countries all over the world, many from France, Spain, USA and Ireland, and she is certain they are life-long friendships she has formed.
"Galway is a great place to live, work and study, and is certainly my favourite Irish city. Galwegians are the nicest people you will ever meet; so friendly and outgoing. The city is full of life and all the events going on throughout the year like the Galway Arts Festival and Galway Races keep us students on our toes. If you enjoy meeting new people and want to build an indestructible network I highly recommend you study at GMIT. Do not just gloss over the course titles. Look at the course details, the modules and the projects and companies involved in the course"
Freshly graduated, Ashlee has great hopes for the future and hopes to land a job as a marketing executive for a multi-national company like Facebook, Google, LinkedIn or Eventbrite. Applying all her skills learned in college, she is excited to work in her field of expertise and training.
