POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS IN ACCOUNTING

A one year conversion programme in accounting for non-accounting graduates

Overview
The School of Business in GMIT offers a one year intensive Postgraduate Diploma in Business in Accounting. This programme is level 9 on the NQAI framework and is offered on a full-time basis over one academic year.  Places on the programme are limited to 30 students, all of whom are existing level 8 non-accounting graduates.

This programme was designed in response to the large number of graduates who wish to change their career focus.  To qualify as an accountant you must become a member of a professional accounting body and to do so you must take exams with the professional body and obtain professional experience.  This programme is the first step towards an interesting and challenging career in accounting.  Existing graduates who pursue accounting may find that they are advantaged in their search for trainee positions due to their diverse backgrounds and maturity.

This highly focussed and practical programme offers a direct pathway to a full-time career in accounting. It provides the learner with a thorough grounding in the fundamental theories, concepts, principles and practices essential to the pursuit of a fulfilling career in the area of professional accountancy.  Learners will gain a number of exemptions from the professional accounting bodies and have a critical understanding of current developments in accounting.

Accounting offers a clearly defined career path, but yet offers a range of employment options.  The main types of accountants are professional accountants (who work in private practice) or management accountants (who work in companies), but there are many specialist roles such as auditors and taxation consultants.  Accounting professionals are consistently in demand in private and public organisations.  Training as an accountant offers increasingly varied roles within organisations at the heart of business development.
