BACHELOR OF ARTS IN APPLIED SOCIAL STUDIES
Why Study for the BA in Applied Social Studies?
This ab initio three-year BA award is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in Applied Social Studies, to prepare the student for professional practice and to enhance the student’s employability in a broad range of social care settings, youth work, community development and interpersonal services. The programme is grounded in a philosophy of social care that is person-centred, developmental and facilitative rather than in a medical, dependency or deficit model. The programme will emphasise the need to prepare the student to enter into authentic and therapeutic relationships.
Programme Modules
The programme will offer a wide range of modules including introductions to sociology and psychology, communications and interpersonal management, law and legal frameworks, social theory, social care practice and issues, diversity and social inclusion.
Career Opportunities
This award will prepare students for social care practice in a structured and supported setting within a wide variety of work areas including social care settings, youth work, childcare, working with people with disabilities, community development and interpersonal services.
Other Essential Information
There will be two work placements: one in the second year of the award and the other in the final year. These will introduce students in a supported manner to social care practice.
VETTING REQUIREMENT
All places are offered on this programme subject to satisfactory Garda vetting clearance.
Follow-on Studies
Students who successfully complete the BA in Applied Social Studies may progress to the BA (Honours) in Applied Social Studies at GMIT, Castlebar.
