Why Study?

Civil engineering is probably the best known type of engineering because the work of the civil engineer is clearly visible to us every day. Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live.

It involves the planning, design and construction of facilities that we require for everyday living, industry and transport. Civil engineering also aims to solve environmental issues such as air pollution, coastal protection and waste treatment. As a civil engineer, you will have a creative, diverse and challenging career and will be making a real contribution to the needs of both modern and developing societies all over the world.

Programme Modules

The programme will develop further the graduate’s skill in core civil engineering areas such as structures, geotechnical engineering, project management and environmental engineering. Written and oral communication will form a significant component of this course. The programme builds on the practically-based civil engineering skills developed in the Ordinary degree programme and will allow them to be employable, adaptable and flexible in their future careers in the civil engineering profession.

The course aims to produce the next generation of civil engineers, fully equipped to meet the needs of industry and the wider local, national and global community. The focus of the Level 8 programme is sustainable construction using integrated civil engineering technologies and in particular the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Work Placement

There is a five-month (minimum) work placement during year three from January to June

Career Opportunities

The graduates will possess the technical and managerial skills necessary to enter careers in planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of the built environment and global infrastructure.

Follow-on Studies: 

Graduates can proceed to the MSc in Environmental Systems in GMIT or Masters programmes in other Institutes of Technology and Universities in Ireland and elsewhere.

Essential Information: 

Recognition by Professional Bodies
The programme has been accredited by Engineers Ireland to enable graduates to apply for associate member grade and gain the title of 'Associate Engineer'. The programme is recognised by the CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) as being eligible for Incorporated Membership of CIOB (ICIOB) on graduation.
Graduates are eligible for full chartered membership (MCIOB) after the appropriate period of professional experience subject to a professional review.

Materials Fee
Students will be liable for an additional materials fee of €100 per year for certain full time programmes. This fee is not covered by Granting Authorities. Material Fees are not applicable to either Erasmus, Part-Time or Full time Non-EU students.
