Why Study Architectural Technology?
The Architectural Technologist is a highly skilled technical professional within the construction industry. As a student of Architectural Technology you will be encouraged to appreciate the concepts of architectural design and apply technical design principles in the development of a building to meet the project brief, the regulatory requirements for the building and the performance requirements for environmental and energy efficiency. The course has a strong work ethic which encourages students to interact closely and, in so doing, make life-long friends and colleagues. In recognition of the practical nature of the course, GMIT provides students of Architectural Technology with dedicated studio spaces for each course year equipped with manual and PC drawing facilities, the latest IT software and plotting facilities.
Programme Modules
The core modules of Detail and Design Studies, Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD), Architectural Technologies and Building Information Modelling (BIM) are delivered throughout the three years of the programme. Modules on the History of Architecture, Conservation, Environmental Studies, Professional Practice and Legal Studies are delivered in years two and three. Project work and other assignments form a substantial part of the coursework. Learners are expected to deliver completed projects from the given briefs throughout the programme.
Career Opportunities
GMIT fosters strong industry and practice links within the construction sector. Graduates in Architectural Technology will have gained skills to allow them to pursue a professional technical career within an architectural or engineering consultancy or the public sector.
Other Essential Information
BSc in Architectural Technology Level 7 is fully accreditated by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). Graduates can also gain full CIOB exemption (eligible for ICIOB) by completing a further 60 ECTS credits.
Follow-on Studies
Graduates can proceed through an internal progression route to year 4 of the Level 8 Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Architectural Technology at GMIT. Direct applicants external to GMIT will also be considered for entry subject to places being available. A variety of options is also available for successful graduates to proceed to professional level studies in institutes of technology or universities in Ireland and elsewhere.
