Introduction to Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering

Technology is all around us. When our mobile phone rings we immediately think of the person on the other end and not the radio signal, or the computer chips, or the software included in every telephone. When we turn on our iPOD, it is the music that matters and not the sophisticated hardware and software systems driving it. When we surf the Net, we want fast access to music, video and information; we do not think of the fibre optics buried under our feet carrying the high speed digital information as pulses of light.

Where would we be without this technology?

A huge range of opportunities exists to become involved with electronic and electrical systems. It is not surprising that graduates of our engineering courses are working in radio and television studios, hospitals, colleges,  medical device companies, the software industry, service companies, or even running their own businesses. Others use their expertise to enter marketing or technical sales. Some are more interested in designing and building gadgets and others enjoy working with the software programmes that give systems their 'intelligence'.

The Irish and European electronic sector predicts a significant shortage of graduates with technical skills. This suggests that graduates of our degrees will have ample job opportunities when they graduate! Major multinationals like HP and Cisco are right here in Galway. Your degree is your passport to work anywhere in the world.

Our course structures are modular in form and this allows students to combine core modules with college-wide (non-engineering) elective subjects. Modules where the learning style is active and cooperative (Project-based learning) are included in much of the course content allowing you to take more control and shape your learning activities.
