The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering
The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering offers programmes in Mechanical, Energy and Operations Engineering.
Our students spend more than half their learning time in our state-of-the-art laboratories, working in small dedicated groups. In the past 2 years, we have invested over half a million in a range of laboratories covering areas such as: Biomedical Engineering; Advanced Automation; CNC Machining; Fluid and Solid Mechanics and most especially our newly commissioned Energy laboratory.
Students are also divided in small groups when attending tutorials. We use problem based learning and computer based activities to engage students in enjoyable and active learning.
We believe in learning by doing and, as a result of our ongoing research and close links with industry, we have been able to obtain work placement for most of our students in the final year of their ordinary degree.
The Department’s staff are committed to getting to known each student on a one-to-one basis. We endeavour to create an atmosphere within the Department where our students feel they can approach us to discuss and resolve any problems and concerns they may have.
On completion of their Ordinary Degree, most of our students choose to register for our add-on Honour Degrees. Based on our significantly funded research programmes we have developed specialist programmes in fields such as Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Product Design and Energy Engineering. Every year, some of our honour degree students join our research teams to complete Masters Degrees and PhDs in these fields. Others preferring a taught Masters have the opportunity to register for our M.Sc. in Environmental Systems.
