The Galway Campus has five specialised schools of study in the disciplines of Business, Humanities, Engineering, Science and Hotel.

The School of Business has two departments: the Department of Management and the Department of Accounting and Information Systems.

The School of Humanities has two departments: the Department of Humanities/Film and Television and the Department of Art and Design (see Cluain Mhuire Campus).

The School of Engineering has three departments: the Department of Building & Civil Engineering; the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering; and the Department of Electronic Engineering.

The School of Science has two departments: the Department of Life & Physical Sciences; and the Department of Mathematics & Computing.

The Hotel School has two departments: the Department of Hotel & Tourism Management; and the Department of Hospitality & Culinary Arts.

A range of research activities exist in areas such as Marine, Biomedical Engineering and Energy. Two Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) Centres: Shelltec (marine research) and GMedTec (biomedical technologies), were established in 2006 with funding from Enterprise Ireland. Both centres are heavily involved with start-ups, indigenous companies and multinationals. 

IiBC (Innovation in Business Centre)
The IiBC was established in 2005, helping entrepreneurs to create new jobs and development opportunities for the region.

Lifelong Learning
Lifelong Learning provide night courses, in a range of accredited and general interest programmes, for continuing professional or personal development.

Library
The Library provides a wide range of services and facilities to support learning, teaching and research in the Institute. It includes an Independent Learning Unit for students with special needs, an IT Training Room, Multimedia Room, Research Unit, Archive Room, Print Room and a suite of Group Study Rooms.

Computing Services
Information and communications technologies are now an integral part of all academic, administrative and technical activities in GMIT.  The Learning Centre on the Galway campus incorporates the Library and IT Centre. The IT Centre has 188 workstations and a fully equipped training room, a multimedia studio, and technical support facilities.
