The Galway Campus has five specialised schools of study in the disciplines of Business, Humanities, Engineering, Science and Hotel. The School of Business has two departments: the Department of Management and the Department of Accounting and Information Systems. The School of Humanities has two departments: the Department of Humanities/Film and Television and the Department of Art and Design (see Cluain Mhuire Campus). The School of Engineering has three departments: the Department of Building & Civil Engineering; the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering; and the Department of Electronic Engineering. The School of Science has two departments: the Department of Life & Physical Sciences; and the Department of Mathematics & Computing. The Hotel School has two departments: the Department of Hotel & Tourism Management; and the Department of Hospitality & Culinary Arts. A range of research activities exist in areas such as Marine, Biomedical Engineering and Energy. Two Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) Centres: Shelltec (marine research) and GMedTec (biomedical technologies), were established in 2006 with funding from Enterprise Ireland.
