BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ART AND DESIGN


Why Study Art & Design?
This is a general undergraduate degree in art, design and new media incorporating the opportunity to specialise in the areas of ceramics, painting, printmaking, sculpture or textiles. The programme combines traditional and contemporary approaches to visual research and art and design practices, including research methodologies, drawing, photography, digital media, art history, critical theory and professional practice taught by specialist practitioners and academics. Learners are encouraged to examine critically and respond to their contemporary environments through various languages of visual culture, craft, and design and art practices.

This is a student-centred programme, taught through studio workshops, demonstrations, lectures, seminars, field trips and one-to-one tutorials.

Programme Modules
Core Visual Studies (the elements and principles of Art and Design,) Learning to Learn, Discipline Studies, Contextual Studies (ideas, concept and process related methodologies), Digital Media, Photography, Art History, Critical Theory, and studio based modules in Ceramics, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Textiles.

Career Opportunities
Graduates will have the opportunity to work as a practitioner in the fields of art, craft design or new media, or subject to further specialisation and experience in the fields of community art, public art, arts administration, art and design education, curation, practice/theory based research and careers linked to contemporary visual art and design culture.

Other Essential Information
This is a restricted-application programme.

As well as the minimum requirements for programmes in GMIT, entry to this programme is by interview/portfolio assessment. Interview/Portfolio assessments usually take place in April, following the CAO deadline.

Follow-on Studies
Graduates may proceed to the Level 8 honours degree programmes in Fine Art or Textile Design in the Department of Art and Design at GMIT or to other institutions nationally and internationally in London.
