BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN FURNITURE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE

The programme equips students with the theoretical and practical techniques which will enable them to function as professionals within the furniture and wood products industry. Projects are structured to simulate real-world situations, which require the students to engage in creative problem solving activities and draw on their knowledge and experience.

Programme Modules
CAD/CAM 2, Project Management, Industrial Design, Management & Strategy, Major Project, and Design of Interiors.

Elective modules are chosen from Professional Placement, Applied Graphics, Interior Architecture and Timber Frame & Joinery.

Career Opportunities
Graduates will be employed in various positions in the furniture and wood products industries with duties including furniture design, product development, project management, estimating, CAD/CAM and interior architectural design.

Many graduates have progressed to senior positions in industry while some others have chosen entrepreneurial options.

Other Essential Information
All projects are directly linked to industry, either in Ireland or internationally.

This programme is recognised by the Teaching Council (TC) for progression to the Higher Diploma in Arts in Education (Technology), on completion of which graduates will be qualified to teach Design & Communication Graphics.

An application has been made to the TC to also include Construction Studies in the subjects that graduates of the diploma will be eligible to teach.

Follow-on Studies
GMIT honours (level 8) qualifications are recognised world-wide for entry to post-graduate programmes. This includes Master of Science research programmes and the Higher Diploma in Arts in Education (2nd Level Teaching) at GMIT Letterfrack.
