Why Study Design and Technology Education?
If you enjoy woodwork and technical graphics, if you like designing and making furniture and if you are keen on teaching these skills to students at school then you should consider studying Design & Technology Education in Letterfrack. As a graduate of the B.Sc. (Honours) Programme in Design & Technology Education you are qualified to teach Materials Technology (Wood) and Technical Graphics to Junior Certificate and Construction Studies and Design and Communication Graphics (DCG) to Leaving Certificate honours standard in the Irish second level school system.

In this four-year programme you are trained in designing, drawing and making furniture, using both hand tools and machines as well as exploring new technologies and developing solutions in a creative and imaginative way. You will learn the theory and develop the skills and competencies to become an excellent teacher and educationalist. During the programme of study you will partake in peer reviewed and micro teaching events at GMIT as well as undertaking teaching practices in second level schools.

Career Opportunities
Graduates will be qualified to teach Materials Technology (Wood) and Technical Graphics to Junior Certificate and Construction Studies and Design and Communication Graphics (DCG) to Leaving Certificate honours standard in all second level schools (vocational, secondary, community and comprehensive schools). Due to the high level of skill acquisition in the earlier part of the course, graduates will be suitably qualified to operate at technician level within the furniture and wood related industry.

Other Essential Information

  • Years one and two of this course are delivered at GMIT, Letterfrack while Years 3 & 4 are run at GMIT, Galway.

  • There is a six week teaching practice in year three and year four of the programme.

  • VETTING REQUIREMENT
    All places are offered on this programme subject to satisfactory Garda vetting clearance.

Minimum Leaving Certificate Entry Requirements
Pass (Grade D3 or better) in six Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish. Two of the subjects must be passed at Higher Level (Grade C3 or better) and must include Design & Communication Graphics or Construction Studies.

Follow-on Studies
Graduates may progress to Masters Degree or Post Graduate Diploma either within the Institute, or via other programmes available nationally and internationally.
