Compositional Painting

Course Description

Compositional painting is  selective arrangement of elements in a painting. That is commonly broken up into elements of compositional painting - how to lead the eye in to a painting, and retain interest in the subject matter. At the end of this course the students will be able to :

Art Appreciation

 - Determine different Artists approaches to compositional painting.

 - Detect what makes up a composition in a painting - foreground, mid-ground, back- ground, focal point.

 - Identify what composition they would like to explore- landscape/still life.

 - Formulate ideas in how to create a composition using imagery to sketch a successful composition.

Paint techniques

 - Exploring the paint medium and experiment using different paint techniques to create texture using brush strokes- dotting, dappling, stippling.

Colour theory

 - Identifying different colour tones -warm and cool colours dark and light colours and how they create form in their painting.

- Applying the finer detail to achieve a completed composition.

No painting experience is necessary.

Students should bring with them A4 /A3 board/card/paper, a 2B/HB Pencil, Ruler, water containers, cloths, pallet, paint brushes - acrylic paint (Primary red, primary yellow, ultramarine blue, sap green, yellow ochre, burnt umber, white, paynes grey).

Course Tutor:

Aoife is graduate from the H.Diploma in Arts for Art and Design Teachers in CIT Cork. She has been living in Galway for fourteen years. Her work includes drawing for Dublin Public Libraries and Fas, Crafts in Grennan Mill Craft School Kilkenny, Fine Art in Cluain Mhuire (paint and print), Interior Design Rhodec International, Window Display Brown Thomas and Gourmet Tart co, Anton’s, Demora, etc. She works as an Art Teacher and very much enjoy encouraging people to awaking their own personal creativity through Art Craft and Design.

Fee: €150

Duration: One evening a week for 7 weeks from 8pm - 10.00pm

Location: Cluain Mhuire Campus, Wellpark.
