Dress Making - Beginners

Course Description:

The aim of the course is to give students the skills, knowledge and understanding of basic dressmaking which will enable them to complete a garment.

Content:

  • Taking Body Measurements
  •  Sewing Terminology
  •  Equipment needed for Dressmaking
  •  Selecting the Right Fabric
  •  Fabric and Pattern Preparation
  •  Following a Pattern
  •  Tips for Cutting Fabric
  •  How to Mark your Fabric

During this course participants will learn how to make up a garment using a pattern for a skirt in a fabric of their own choice.

On completion of the course participants will have learned how to:

  • Read a basic pattern
  • Make minor size adjustments
  • Mark each pattern piece
  • Cut out accurately
  • Tailor tack’ pattern pieces
  • Use seam allowances
  • Assemble pieces
  • Finish off seams neatly

Details of pattern to be purchased will be given in the first week.

Students will also need:

Measuring tape; pins; scissors x 2 (household for cutting paper and dressmaking for fabric); tailors chalk; fabric, lining and notions as outlined on the commercial pattern.

Course Tutor:

Phyllis Smyth has over 15 years experience as a Fashion Designer and Style Consultant. She specialises in wedding couture and ran a successful design studio for many years. Her designs have featured on several RTE Fashion Programmes and in numerous Bridal publications. Phyllis has always been interested in passing on her knowledge and skills to novice dressmaking enthusiasts .

Duration: One evening a week for 7 weeks from 8pm - 10pm

Location: Cluain Mhuire Campus, Wellpark.
