A new degree in Electrical Services & Automation Engineering is being offered for the first time in the west, northwest and midlands by GMIT.GMIT is offering advanced entry for qualified electricians who will be able to enter the second year of the programme, commencing this September (2011). The new three-year full-time Bachelor of Engineering programme will be open to school leavers, mature applicants and electrical apprentices.
The programme will focus on five key areas: Electrical Power, Electrical Services, Electrical Automation, Energy Systems, and Business and Project Management Skills. Graduates of the programme will be prepared for the specification, installation, supervision and maintenance in areas such as electrical power distribution, standby generation, lighting, emergency systems (fire alarms etc) and building management systems. They will be competent in the use of computer-aided drawing (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) packages.
Barry Finnegan, GMIT Dept of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, says GMIT is delighted to be given the go ahead to run this new programme: "It fulfills the objectives set out in the Forfas 'Expert Group on Future Skills Needs' report to upskill the current workforce, particularly those who have traditional skills such as electricians, who formerly worked in the construction sector".
"Having acquired suitable work experience, graduates of the programme may expect to progress quickly to positions of responsibility where independent technical judgement will be exercised and will be capable of working with a significant degree of autonomy". adds Mr Finnegan.
"Results of a recent survey of both GMIT graduates and potential employers, conducted by GMIT, indicate there is a demand for this programme from electricians as well as potential employers in industry. Many electricians in the region will now be able to stay here to obtain this qualification, and not have to travel outside the region".
Ray Weldon, Lecturer, GMIT Dept. of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, GMIT, says:
"This is a unique degree geared for those working in the operations and maintenance of manufacturing plant in order to support export-led production and the emerging renewable energy sector. There has been a consistent demand over the years for further educational opportunities from our cohort of past students."
