GMIT School of Engineering is holding an Open Evening at its main campus in Galway on Thursday 8th December for Leaving Certificate students, mature applicants and anyone interested in starting or furthering a career in engineering and technology.
The School of Engineering offers a broad range of engineering, technology and management programmes in Civil, Computing & Electronic, Energy, Operations, and Mechanical Engineering. Entry through the CAO is generally onto an ordinary degree (level 7) from which students can progress to appropriate honours degrees (level 8) in GMIT.
Work placements and opportunities to study abroad in partner institutions in the US and Europe are incorporated into most of the engineering programmes. A final-year project is designed to challenge students on real industry problems that require the integration of their knowledge and skills acquired over the course of the programme.
Information on the modules and programmes will be available at the Open Evening where staff and students will be on hand to answer questions about engineering choices, career prospects, college student services, supports and funding.
Gerard Mac Michael, Head of Engineering, says the School of Engineering programmes put value on practical work-based learning methods:
“Our programmes focus on the practical problem-solving techniques and methods appropriate to each engineering discipline. The learning and teaching methods incorporate assessments, project work and presentations. Each student also has an opportunity to avail of work placement, which is, in effect, learning on-the-job.”
“All of our students can avail of overseas study at one of our partner institutions in North America and Europe. The international experience broadens their perspective and extends their learning experiences.
“The practical strengths of our engineering programmes are the result of strong and long-established links with practitioners and industry. A panel of senior industry experts also advises the School of Engineering on the strategic development of the School and its programmes,” adds Mr MacMichael.
