Barry McMillan wins GMIT President's Teaching Excellence Award

Barry McMillan, a lecturer in Ethics & Religious Studies, has won the 2011 GMIT President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

Mr McMillan joined the teaching staff of GMIT in September 2008 and currently lectures in the Schools of Humanities, Business, and Hotel. His academic specialities are Ethics, Religious Studies, English, Communications and Research Supervision. He is a widely-published writer, an acclaimed conference speaker, and an experienced broadcaster.

Mr McMillan has worked, nationally and internationally, in the fields of education and community development since the 1990s. He believes that every student can flourish if appropriately challenged and supported. His commitment to this ideal is reflected in the personal testimonials of some of his students:

Mary MacCague, Head of the GMIT School of Humanities, says:  “Barry is a consummate professional, who has the ability to bring out the best in all his students, regardless of their level.  He is an extremely valued member of staff in the School of Humanities, who has a total commitment to any task which he undertakes.”

Commenting on his award, Barry McMillan, says:  “I want to express my gratitude to everyone who was instrumental in my receiving this award.  It means a huge amount to have my contribution to GMIT affirmed in this way.”

The annual GMIT award, which recognises and honours teaching of the highest standard, was presented to Mr McMillan by GMIT President Michael Carmody at the GMIT Conferrings in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway, on Friday 12 November.
