The Lifelong Learning Centre at GMIT, Galway, is to run a range of short accredited evening courses in Energy Engineering, at substantially reduced prices, commencing 23rd July.

GMIT is collaborating with Renewable Energy Skills Skillnet (RESS), an industry organisation whose aims are to promote the concept of using renewable energy to heat buildings, offer training in renewable energy heating systems, and develop national standards.

As a result of this collaboration, the cost to members of Renewable Energy Skills Skillnet to undertake the GMIT modules is reduced by up to 40%.

The short courses/modules are: Energy Technologies and Installations - Solar/Biomass/Wind/ Heat Pump, Building Energy Rating for New and Existing Domestic Buildings, Energy Analysis 1 - Air Pressurisation/Infrared Thermography, Energy Analysis 2 - Energy Management Systems.

The duration of the individual Energy Technologies and Installations modules are six days, run on Friday evenings and some Saturdays, while the other modules are delivered on eight to nine weekdays. Details on course fees are available on www.gmmit.ie/lifelong-learning  (click on programmes, then click on accredited)

The energy engineering modules are the same as those offered to full-time undergraduates of the B.Eng in Energy Engineering degree.

Gerard McMichael, Head of the School of Engineering, GMIT, says: “These short modules will appeal mainly to plumbers and electricians in the renewable energy sector who wish to upskill and who may not have the time to return to a full-time day programme. This part-time method of delivery suits a majority of people and we are delighted, thanks to this new collaboration with Renewable Energy Skills Skillnet, to offer these modules at a substantially reduced price. It is excellent value for money.”

Dick Whelan, Network Manager, RESS, says: “We welcome GMIT as a supplier to Renewable Energy Skills Skillnet. This will allow people in the industry the opportunity to progress towards a HETAC qualification while at the same time obtain practical skills which they can apply in their business and which are recognised by Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland."
