Press Release

Over 1,000 secondary school students from across the country are expected to attend two Open Days in GMIT’s Galway campuses, on Friday 19 October, 9.30am to 3pm and Saturday 20 October, 10am to 1pm

A scheduled series of learning experience talks will take place on both days on a range of discipline areas with information on work placements, international study opportunities and student projects. Friday’s events are aimed at large school groups from Transition Year to Leaving Certificate; Saturday is an ideal opportunity for parents to attend with students, and also mature students.

GMIT students from Business, Science & IT, Engineering, Tourism & Arts, and Humanities will lead guided tours to each school and department. A shuttle bus service will operate every half hour between the Dublin Road main campus and the nearby Centre for the Creative Arts & Media at the GMIT Cluain Mhuire campus on Wellpark Road. The school tours and workshops are an excellent opportunity for pupils to get a real feel for each discipline area.

Pupils, teachers and parents will get to experience GMIT college life, talk to the lectures and students about the various programmes in all GMIT campuses, explore the lecture rooms, science and engineering laboratories, state of the art kitchens, art studios, media rooms and workshops.

A special networking session for all School Guidance Counsellors and teachers will take place with the Registrar of GMIT Michael Hannon, the Heads of each School and campus, the GMIT Schools Liaison Office and GMIT Access Office. This session will involve a demonstration of the new ‘Online Schools Talks’ software, followed by a networking lunch in GMIT’s newly named College of Tourism & Arts in the main campus (Dublin Road). The Open Day also includes a Students Union Exhibition displaying aspects of student life in the college.

Dr Carina Ginty, Schools Liaison Officer, GMIT, says: “This is a special year for GMIT marking 40 years of delivering third level education to the region. We have an exciting line up of workshops and activities planned for the Open Days including ceramics throwing demonstrations, film screenings, portfolio clinics, and live pancake making from our College of Tourism and Arts. In Electronic Engineering, pupils will get an opportunity to build an alien or check out iPhone or Android applications. In the School of Science there will be interactive exhibits in freshwater and marine biology and the School of Business will have an interactive business zone set-up. Full programme details are available online at www.gmit.ie/slo. “
