2,315 GMIT students to be conferred with awards

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) will confer awards on 2,315 students during four conferring days this month (November) in its campus in Letterfrack on Friday 1 November, in Castlebar’s TF Royal Hotel on Friday 8 November, and in Galway city’s Radisson Blu Hotel on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 November.

The first conferring ceremony in GMIT’s Letterfrack campus – the National Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design & Technology – will see 102 students conferred with awards in degree programmes in furniture design, manufacture, technology, and teacher training in the specialisms of design & communications, graphics and construction studies.

The Mayo campus conferring ceremony takes place in the TF Royal Hotel opposite the campus on Friday 8 November; 381 students will receive their awards in a range of programmes in Business, Technology, Humanities, Nursing & Social Studies, and Outdoor Education.

The final two conferring days take place in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway City, on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 November; 1,832 students from the two Galway city campuses will receive a range of awards in Business, Engineering, Tourism & Creative Arts, and Science & Computing.

GMIT will confer several new awards this year, such as the B.Sc. in Computing and Energy Systems  and the B.Eng in Electrical Services and Automation Engineering (both programmes are delivered in the Galway campus), and the B.Sc (Hons) in Sustainable Building Technology (Mayo campus). A number of Masters degrees will also be conferred in Engineering, Science, Mechanical Engineering and Aquatic Science.

Michael Hannon, Registrar of GMIT, says this year’s number of graduates has increased by 10% overall, with 2,315 students graduating this year compared to 2083 last year (2012).

“Our conferring ceremonies not only celebrate the achievements of our talented students and staff but also celebrate the efforts and major supports parents and families put into helping their young adults to the third-level finish line.”
