GMIT Open Evening on Careers in Accounting (Thurs 11 Feb)

An information evening on accounting programmes offered by GMIT, including technician, undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes, will take place in the GMIT Galway (Dublin Road) campus on Thursday, 11 February, from 6.30pm to 8pm.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the commencement of the Level 8 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Accountancy programme which has seen almost 400 students graduate from the course since 2008.

The public event will be attended by lecturing staff and accountancy students who will answer questions about the various pathways to a career in accounting, the variety of programmes on offer, and the professional accounting bodies.  A number of graduates from the programme, currently working as trainee accountants will be on-hand to answer questions, including GMIT accounting graduate James Peyton who is president of the student division of Chartered Accounting Ireland.

Eamon Walsh, Head of Accounting & Information Systems, GMIT, says “Interest in studying accounting is strong and the jobs market for accountancy graduates remains buoyant in areas such as tax, compliance, solvency and financial management.  Many accounting firms are now leaving job opportunities open year round, whereas in the past they had a window of a couple of months for recruitment.”

“Most of our recent graduates are now working as trainee accountants and/or studying for their professional exams.  Every company employs or uses the services of an accountant so there are always job opportunities in accounting.”

“There are also options for graduates of non-business disciplines. The Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting remains a popular option for those who are finding it difficult to get employment and wish to change direction or enhance their existing qualifications.  Graduates of this postgrad diploma will gain numerous exemptions from Chartered Accounting Ireland and ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).”

“GMIT has developed a strong reputation for accounting education with undergraduate programmes being offered on both the Galway and Castlebar campuses, and technician, conversion and professional programmes also offered in Galway,” says Mr Walsh.
