What I Do: Freelance Instructor and FAS Trainer/GMIT Instructor

I worked for two years as an outdoor education instructor in Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre. I have worked on a FAS outdoor instructor training programme as a kayak trainer. Now I am part-time lecturer in Outdoor Education in IT Tralee. Part of my role is to develop the personal skills of our students to a level that allows them to train as instructors. Once this has been achieved the focus shifts to build on their skill set and support them while they prepare to qualify as instructors. In more recent years I have taken on a wide range of freelance instruction including running instructional courses for the Irish Canoe Union and working for GMIT in the areas of kayaking, Windsurfing and Hill Walking. The variety is great and demonstrates the importance of completing your qualifications if you want to work in this sector.

How the course helped  me

My time on the Outdoor Education course in GMIT gave me an opportunity to begin to understand more about the complexities of how people learn. The broad scope of the syllabus allowed me to widen my view of the outdoor field while gaining valuable experience. Anyone with an interest in the outdoors could gain a lot from this course.
