Programme Modules
Year 1: Production Agriculture, Environmental Science, Economics, Accountancy, Communications, Computing and Information Systems and Business Statistics.
Year 2: Drystock Production, Farm Management and Safety, Marketing, Analytical Science and electives such as Business Law, Sales and Selling, Agricultural Economics, Farm Mechanisation, Advanced Dairy Production or Business Information Systems.
Year 3: Environmental Management, Market Research, Enterprise Development, Sustainable Development, Sustainable Agriculture, Agri-marketing, an Agri-enterprise project and a variety of electives such as Financial Management and Taxation, the Irish Economy, Food Production and Quality Assurance.
Career Opportunities
This programme is for people who intend to become part-time farmers, full-time commercial farmers or for those who wish to use the specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills and competencies to initiate and develop rural enterprises, be employed as community rural development officers, as agricultural officers with the department of agriculture, as field technicians or as sales representatives with agri-service companies.
Other Essential Information

Year one of the programme is common with the BBS in Rural Enterprise and Agri-business course (GA 172) and is based at Mountbellew on four days per week and one day per week in GMIT.

Year two of the programme is based at Mountbellew on three days per week and at GMIT two day per week.

Students reside at Mountbellew for the first two years.

Year three is spent at the GMIT Galway campus.

There is a three month work placement period in year two on a farm, environmental project or an agribusiness.

Graduates satisfy the training requirements for farming and farm grants as follows:

Students who do not wish to progress to year three may graduate with a Higher Certificate in Science on successful completion of year two. Higher Certificate graduates are entitled to get a 'Letter of Equivalence' to the FETAC Advanced Certificate in Agriculture (Level 6) award.

Similarly, graduates of the Level 7 Ordinary Degree programme are entitled to get a 'Letter of Equivalence' to the FETAC Advanced Certificate in Agriculture (Level 6) award.

Follow-on Studies
Graduates can transfer to Bachelor and Bachelor (Honours) Degree courses at this or other colleges and universities in Ireland and elsewhere. Such transfers are dependent on results and on comparability of courses. Linkages with EU colleges open up exciting possibilities for further study.
