Your Place - Your Future : GMIT Montage

PLACEMENT

Therese Dooher, 3rd Year Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science student

As part of my work experience with Nortev Ltd (Veterinary Medical Products), I was given the duty of finding out the different interactions of certain drugs with the metallic parts of a new medical device.

One of the most important tests was an accelerated corrosion test with drugs that were going to be used with the device. This research was vital for the future production of the device due to the different corrosion properties of different drugs which could affect the reliability of the device. I was given the tasks of solving this problem.

Using my initiative, I performed a test  to adapt a procedure that had been developed by one of my lecturers at GMIT and using GLP (Good Laboratory Procedure)  learn more about this corrosion problem.

Directly from the results that I obtained from my testing it was discovered that the drugs corroded key metallic parts of the device too easily.  As a result, these parts were changed before the final production units were made.
