BACHELOR OF BUSINESS IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT


Why Study Tourism Management?
This award will prepare you for many of the business roles available in the tourism industry. You will develop skills appropriate to both operational and supervisory management levels. The programme will also develop entrepreneurial skills to facilitate new business start-ups and in today’s economic climate these skills will prove invaluable upon graduation. The integrated work placement in second year, allows you to experience at first hand the challenges, demands and rewards of working in this exciting and challenging industry.

Programme Modules
A number of modules are covered on this programme including Tourism Operations, Financial Accounting, Computing and Information Systems, Economics, Marketing, Business Information Systems, International Transport, Tourism Policy and Planning, Human Resource Management, Enterprise Development and a range of electives from one of the following language and culture choices: French/German/Spanish/Irish.

Other Essential Information

Work Placements
After the second year examinations, students undertake a 30 week industrial placement, organised by the LINKS office in conjunction with the student. Irish and European students complete their placement outside of Ireland and non EU students will complete their placement in Ireland. An industrial project must be completed in respect of this placement.

If students are considering an international career the school would encourage students to study an International language during their four years of study and to complete their international placement in a location that supports the development of the language.

International Links
The School has extensive international links with hotels, tourism organisations and educational organisations. In addition the school is an active member of various hotel school associations including the Association of European Hotel & Tourism schools (AEHT) and the Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE).

Career Opportunities
Upon completion you will be capable of undertaking a wide range of supervisory roles within the tourism industry. The programme will also provide a foundation for the development of entrepreneurial activities. The inclusion of modern European languages will also aid students’ mobility within the European Union.

Follow-on Studies
Graduates may progress to the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Hotel and Catering Management within the Hotel School or to the Bachelor of Business (honours) degree within the School of Business. The programme was developed and is taught by colleagues from both the School of Business and the Hotel School.
