REQUEST FOR SUBMISSIONS
OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ACT 2003
PREPARATION OF DRAFT SCHEME 2017-2020
GMIT has begun to draw up a new draft scheme in accordance with Section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. The primary objective of the Act is to ensure better availability and a higher standard of public services through Irish.
GMIT now wishes to invite submissions in relation to the preparation of the draft scheme from any interested parties. Submissions should ideally not exceed 4,000 words (c. 8 pages). Submissions can be made in either official language, or both.
Preferably, submissions, which will be made available on GMIT’s website, should be forwarded electronically to email@example.com Alternatively, they may be posted to An Coiste Gaeilge, c/o The President’s Office, GMIT, Dublin Road, Galway. The latest date for receipt of submissions is 4.30pm on Friday, 23rd June, 2017.

GMIT IRISH LANGUAGE SCHEME 2013-2016
GMIT’s commitments to the Irish language are outlined in the GMIT Irish Language Scheme 2013-2016 (PDF, 506KB). This Scheme sets out a range of areas in which the Institute has committed to improving bilingual services in the years ahead. It was launched by the GMIT Governing Body in September 2013.
This Scheme was prepared under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. The Official Languages Act 2003 was signed into law on 14 July 2003 and its primary aim is to ensure better availability and a higher standard of public services through Irish.
AN COISTE GAEILGE
GMIT has an active Coiste Gaeilge comprising of staff and students. The Coiste oversees the promotion of the Irish language in GMIT and is currently developing innovative ideas to increase the use of Irish on each campus.
IRISH COURSES IN GMIT
GMIT offers an Ard Dioplóma/MSc i nGaeilge Fheidhmeach agus Aistriúchán in conjunction with Europus and Údarás na Gaeltachta.
Irish is offered as an elective subject up to degree level on various academic programmes in GMIT.
A number of GMIT lecturers have helped develop an award-winning online language learning course which is available in many languages including Irish. The free online programme caters specifically for workers and trainees in the hospitality and tourism industry (see www.eurocatering.org).
Language teaching staff (Irish, French, German & Spanish) host a GMIT Languages Day each year. This annual event highlights the importance of learning languages other than English.
The use of Irish on campus is promoted by a part-time Irish Language Officer with the Students' Union.
