GMIT is committed to the promotion and development of the Irish language on campus. We also aim to increase the range and standard of services available in Irish to members of the public.
GMIT IRISH LANGUAGE SCHEME 2013-2016
GMIT’s commitments to the Irish language are outlined in the GMIT Irish Language Scheme 2013-2016 (PDF, 506KB). This Scheme sets out a range of areas in which the Institute has committed to improving bilingual services in the years ahead. It was launched by the GMIT Governing Body in September 2013.
This Scheme was prepared under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. The Official Languages Act 2003 was signed into law on 14 July 2003 and its primary aim is to ensure better availability and a higher standard of public services through Irish.
AN COISTE GAEILGE
GMIT has an active Coiste Gaeilge comprising of staff and students. The Coiste oversees the promotion of the Irish language in GMIT and is currently developing innovative ideas to increase the use of Irish on each campus.
IRISH COURSES IN GMIT
GMIT offers an Ard Dioplóma/MSc i nGaeilge Fheidhmeach agus Aistriúchán in conjunction with Europus and Údarás na Gaeltachta.
Irish is offered as an elective subject up to degree level on various academic programmes in GMIT.
A number of GMIT lecturers have helped develop an award-winning online language learning course which is available in many languages including Irish. The free online programme caters specifically for workers and trainees in the hospitality and tourism industry (see www.eurocatering.org).
Language teaching staff (Irish, French, German & Spanish) host a GMIT Languages Day each year. This annual event highlights the importance of learning languages other than English.
The use of Irish on campus is promoted by a part-time Irish Language Officer with the Students' Union.
