Advanced Skills for Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing

Description

The aim of this modue is to prepare student in advancing their skills, knowledge and expertise that reflect evidence based practice from a national and international perspective. It wil include opportunity for the student to explore complex and life threatening situations and implement appropriate interventions and approaches including service user safety, minimise or reduce risk, understanding the importance of teamworking, assessment and management of risk and employing quality improvement methods to enhance care across the life span.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically explore national and international legislation, regulatory frameworks and evidence based practice, that reflect the skills, knowledge and expertise for mental health care delivery in a variety of practice settings

  2. Critically explore the changing role and expanding scope of psychiatric nursing practice to improve the range and quality of services and outcomes for individuals families and carers

  3. Critically discuss a comprehensive multi-professional approach to care that demonstates positive collaboration and partnership working with care providers to promote effective and safe decision making.

  4. Critically explore clinical supervision framework processes that provide professional support and learning to enable practitioners develop their knowledge and competence of their own practice

  5. Critically discuss flexible and approprate responses and approaches across a variety of practice environments aimed at reducing and/or minimising harm, promoting positive risk taking and safe planning,

  6. Discuss the nurses role,responsibility and therapeutic approach when responsing to emergency life threatening situations,critical incidents and acute illness/challenging behaviour.
