Advocacy and Collaborative Approaches in Community Development and Youth Work

In contemporary societies the prevalence of information technology, diversity, specialised skills sets and social issues has witnessed people from within communities or dispersed over wide geographical areas coming together to problem-solve, be creative and respond to a variety of social issue.  Recently, policy at international, European and national level advocates for the formation of collaborations as an efficient and effective way to respond to the needs of individuals and communities.  This module guides the learner to critically examine terms including inter-agency,  interprofessional and participatory collaboration among others to develop an understanding of what is meant by collaborative practice.   A review of various theoretical perspectives and models assist the learner to understand their own practice role and the role of others in the formation of collaborations and when advocacy is appropriate.  The overall purpose of collaboration will be explored to consider holistic responses and the promotion of social justice.

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of collaborative approaches that are applied in practice

  2. Critically analyse policy documents advocating collaborative approaches by drawing upon theoretical perspectives 

  3. Present an understanding of the skills required to effectively contribute to a collaboration 

  4. Evidence an understanding of advocacy, principles, processes and practice.

  5. Deliberate the potential and limitations of collaborative working when advocating for diverse groups .
