Marketing/Agribusiness Graduate - Ronan Byrne

Ronan went to Mountbellew Agriculture College to study Agribusiness & Rural Development and finished with a degree in Marketing/Agribusiness in GMIT. Following this he completed a Masters Degree in EU Integration, focusing on farm policy - CAP and rural developments role within CAP. He spent some years working in marketing for blue chip companies, followed on with a period in Poland managing a large
arable and dairy farm, until he returned home to set up a business producing food on the family farm and selling it directly to consumers.

“Through sustainable food production we produce good, wholesome food, sold under our brand ‘The Friendly Farmer’. Approximately 6 years ago we began making the transition from a 35 acre traditional dry livestock farm to a poultry farm. In 2012 the farm produced 7,000 pasture reared chickens, 800 pasture reared bronze turkeys and 150 pasture reared geese.

“The farm is the main supplier to the now thriving food producing business ‘The Friendly Farmer’. The food business takes the raw material from the farm and processes it into products that we supply direct to our customer base. Each year our business has grown, a trend we see continuing in the future with the recent development of our on-farm abattoir, a facility that will enable us to do so. Our farm in 2013 will hopefully raise, process and supply the poultry meat for around 90,000 individual meals, all happening on the lovely green fields of Athenry.”
