Aquatic Animal Behaviour

Description

This module deals with fundamental concepts in the scientific study of animal behaviour, and with the application of behavioural concepts to the conservation, management and welfare of aquatic animals. It contains a mixture of theoretical and practical elements, including lectures, laboratory work and field work.

Sustainable development topics referenced within the module include: Clean Water and Sanitation; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; Life Below Water; Life on Land.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain fundamental concepts in the scientific study of animal behaviour.

  2. Describe and assess the use of behavioural concepts for the conservation and management of aquatic animals, and in ensuring high standards in aquatic animal welfare.

  3. Critically evaluate published scientific studies in aquatic animal behaviour.

  4. Demonstrate the practical and analytical skills required to study animal behaviour in laboratory and field settings.

  5. Design and carry out laboratory-based behavioural studies. Analyse, interpret and explain the results of the studies.
