Architectural Technologies and Services 2

Description

This module outlines the theoretical and practical requirements for the construction of medium scale commercial / industrial buildings. The module is delivered in two overarching sections: 1. Architectural Technology, and 2. Services. On completion of this module, a student will have a good understanding of architectural technology details for medium scale commercial/industrial building typology construction, such as commercial timber frame construction, steel frame construction, concrete frame construction, a range of commercial flooring and cladding types, curtain walling and structural glazing, as well as a range of roof covering types, site general arrangement drawings and details, and B5, and B3 Fire Safety Report requirements for a commercial / industrial building. Building regulation requirements pertaining to medium scale commercial / industrial buildings will be outlined in terms of the requirements for 1. Architectural Technology, and for 2. Services content includes the heating, ventilation, electrical and transportation services for buildings other than dwellings. An emphasis is placed on energy efficient and sustainability of services.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the technical design principles, techniques, methods of construction, construction sequence, contractual and site-based inter-relationships between elements and equivalencies for final assembly, relating to the architectural technology of a medium-sized commercial / industrial building.

  2. Apply, under direction, current technologies and processes to a non-complex medium-sized commercial / industrial building design for its'  building envelopes' construction from the ground to roof inclusive.

  3. Produce, under direction, appropriate project documentation, use basic building performance design tools, and produce non-complex calculations, through project-based learning and technical detail design, such as site plan and service requirements.

  4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the importance of statutory and regulatory requirements pertaining to building and buildings, applied through project-based learning and technical detail design. Apply the applicable current Building Regulations for services design.

  5. Demonstrate a comprehension of the essential elements of the design process and methodologies for a basic commercial building space heating, electrical and ventilation services.

  6. Complete a basic layout for the space heating and electrical services for a commercial building.

  7. Explain the basic principles and efficiencies of various renewable energy technologies applicable for a commercial building. Describe strategies to optimize the mechanical ventilation system of a commercial building.
