Behaviour and Cognition

Description

This module provides students with an introduction to two cornerstones of psychological inquiry: behavioural and cognitive perspectives.  The module begins with an overview of the basic theories of behaviourism, and its central contribution to theories of learning.  The rise of the cognitive perspective is discussed and a broad overview of cognitive research and theory is presented.

  1. Describe and illustrate basic theories in cognitive and behavioural psychology and how both schools are linked

  2. Summarise the historical development of cognitive psychology as a reaction to the behavioural model  

  3. Discuss the criticisms of behavioual and cognitive perspectives

  4. Discuss the key research methods used in cognitive psychology

  5. Identify and discuss relevant applications of behavioural and cognitive theory
