Business (Mayo Campus) - James O Boyle
Since secondary school I had always had an interest in business studies and have family members working in business and the finance sector who have inspired me.
I tried out a business course in a college outside of my hometown and worked for two years before deciding to return to college.
After talking to two friends who had attended the business course in GMIT Mayo and had great praise for the campus and the business programme I decided to contact the college.
I met with the Head of Business who was a great help in advising me on how to make up credits I had missed in my previous time in college.
With the help of my employers and the college I was able to work around my classes in first year and returned full time in second year. I am now in my final year of the business degree programme.
Compared to the bigger college I attended, I feel more connected with the campus and have greater communication with my lecturers.
I have gotten to know more people in GMIT Mayo due in part to the smaller student numbers and the friendly atmosphere around the campus, and through playing sport.
I've really enjoyed my time playing soccer and Gaelic and even got to play in an All-Ireland Final with the Gaelic team last year. Both clubs have great coaches and the teams are extremely well looked after by the Sports Officer.
I find lecturers have a passion for their subjects which makes for a great learning experience; they give great examples from the working world and are always up to date with the changing trends.
