Why Study?

  • This Certificate has been developed in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) Cyber Defence Center.
  • The modules, content and delivery have been created in collaboration with HPE to ensure that the required skillset is available to all organisations (cyber specific or not), to proactively and reactively mitigate against cyberattack operations.
  • Organisations implement security measures to protect against data loss. Risk and compliance controls implemented within an organisation often fail to protect the organisation against a cyberattack incident. In such an event, cybersecurity operations respond to the incident and defend the compromised vulnerability.
  • The aim of the Certificate is to educate IT practitioners in systematically responding to cyberattack incidents. It examines the tools to identify threat actors. Models and frameworks are followed to manage the response. Data analytics can use tools such as machine learning to identify anomalies in organisational IT traffic. Cybersecurity Operations involves implementing secure architecture to defend against vulnerable systems. It can be considered the stage when risk and compliance has failed.

Learning Outcomes: 

On successful completion of this programme the learner will/should be able to:

  1. The learner will have expert knowledge of one or more current, incident detection and response methodologies that use state-of-the-art data collection and analytical tools
  2. The learner will have expert knowledge of programming in a cybersecurity context.
  3. The learner will have critical awareness of current tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) associated with Criminal Cyber Groups, Nation States, and Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups and demonstrate a critical understanding of intelligence in cybersecurity operations to detect and respond to ongoing incidents.
  4. The learner will be able to communicate to a range of audiences in both written and verbal media about new and emerging theories and technologies in an articulate and convincing fashion, relating to incident detection and response methodologies, programming languages and secure architecture.
  5. The learner will be able to integrate knowledge of various technologies and computing principles to successfully plan and develop an incident detection and response policy
  6. The learner will develop new cybersecurity operational skills to a high level, involving novel and emerging techniques in programming and IT architectural security.
  7. The learner will be able to analyse and document measures to detect and respond to Cyber Threats
  8. The learner will be able to design and implement applications and secure configurations that requires significant preliminary research.
  9. The learner will be able to initiate, lead and manage projects of significant complexity involving multidisciplinary cybersecurity operational teams
  10. The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of continuing personal development in incident detection and response, associated programming languages and secure IT architecture
  11. The learner will be able to demonstrate a critical appreciation of the design issues associated with cybersecurity operations within an organisation and the wider social context.

Blended delivery - One day per month is provided for in a classroom environment and computer lab.

This is optional but does give the student an environment to discuss module content.  Computer labs are used to examine cyber analytical tools, frameworks, models, machine learning and investigative platforms.  However this lab work will need to be replicated asynchronously for
self-directed research in modules.

One day per term is mandatory to assess the abilities of the student to present continuous assessment work on each of the modules.  This ensures that timelines are being adhered to and the presentation of their work contributes significantly to the module’s overall assessment marks.

Places will be awarded on academic merit. If all places have not been filled by applicants holding the required entry requirement (Level 8 Major Award) Recognised Prior Learning may be offered to those holding a Level 7 degree plus 3 years work experience.
