Description
An advanced course in the role and functions of Production Design, developing and refining creative and critical skills for film and broadcast productions.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of production design practice for film and broadcast purposes.
- Effectively interpret a design brief and communicate the information needed to collaborate with crew members in other departments to realise the director's vision, through the design of the physical atmosphere on screen using a combination of sets, props, visual effects and location work.
Exhibit the self-confidence and self discipline in the planning, research, analysis and management of a design project while monitoring the design elements during filming, ensuring that all the sets are prepared in advance for filming in accordance with the schedule.
- Show evidence of an advanced awareness of the elements of practical lighting, colour and texture in the form of dressings and props, while considering the importance of "what the camera sees" through a knowledge of aspect ratios and lens angles.
Display an advanced understanding of construction drawings, Sketchup Pro (3D Software) and Computer Aided Design (AutoCAD) and their function in the design process.
- Design, construct, budget and dress a three-dimensional spatial set as part of a design project ensuring damage limitation and successful completion of the project while demonstrating a thorough understanding of health and safety requirements.
- Identify design solutions and creatively employ imagination and initiative relevant to the specific design task.
- Synthesise knowledge, critical thinking and advanced technical and artistic processes in the design of original work to carry out self-initiated research and a self-managed body of work and portfolio.
