Development and Globalisation

Description

To enhance and develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the concept and realities of ‘development’ and the impact of globalisation and of contemporary political-economic orthodoxy on the process. In this context, it will explore the relationship between markets, corporate globalisation and the ‘under-developed poor’ and ‘over-developed rich’ worlds. The module aims to provide students with frameworks for ‘looking at’ the world, and the tools and confidence to contest conventional frameworks and to develop new ones.

Learning Outcomes

  1. a knowledge and understanding of the concepts of 'development', 'sustainability' and 'globalisation', and their inter-relationship;

  2. a knowledge and understanding of the international institutional framework for promoting development and globalisation and of the nature, role and effectiveness of development aid;

  3. a conceptual framework for understanding and critically evaluating contemporary political-economic orthodoxy and, in particular, the relationship between markets, corporate globalisation, sustainable development and poverty;

  4. a conceptual framework for understanding and critically evaluating the inter-relationship between the the 'under-developed' and the 'over-developed' worlds, particularly through the lens of moral obligation, equality and global justice;

  5. an active interest in and a critical awareness of contemporay issues in relation to development, sustainability and global justice.
