Energy Technologies & Installations
This module is spread over 35 weeks and has 4 primary objectives. The first objective is to develop an understanding of biomass heat generation and operation. The second objective is for the learner to develop a thorough knowledge of solar technologies and installations, including solar thermal and solar photo-voltaic. The third objective is to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of wind energy generation and installation. The fourth and final objective of the module is to develop the learners understanding of the fundamentals of heat pump design, operation, and installation.
Appreciate the drivers causing environmental change and associated environmental policy
Recall the fundamentals of thermodynamics and heat transfer
Explain the fundamentals of solar radiation and the operation, installation and economics of associated energy transfer systems
Critically evaluate the operation, installation and economics of biomass energy systems
Understand the fundamentals of wind energy and microscale wind turbine operation and installation
Critically evaluate the operation, installation and economics of heat pump and air conditioning systems
Conduct experiments to assess the performance and operation of solar, biomass, wind and heat pump systems.
