Fashion Textile Research and Development

Description

This is an award stage module where students identify and investigate a research avenue of personal interest and set specific goals for applying this research to in the development of a contemporary textile-led capsule collection in Semester 8. The module provides students with a foundation of research and knowledge from which their main project in Contemporary Fashion and Textiles can evolve in Semester 8. An emphasis on drawing, experimentation and other visual methods of information gathering including research into contemporary design culture is a feature of the module. Practical and theoretical based learning is underpinned by a strong emphasis on the development of the learner's cognitive and visual communication skills.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Formulate independent research proposals, judgements and actions and manage own learning in a professional and ethical manner;

  2. Develop skills in resourcing, documenting and collating visual and other material relevant to the stated goals; employ cognitive thinking processes within the research field of contemporary and historical textile design.

  3. Analyse information and demonstrate selectivity in how research is utilised to generate conceptual design ideas in contemporary design contexts; respond to creative challenges arising from critical reflection and lateral thinking.

  4. Research, investigate and accurately describe the materials, processes and techniques used in a wide variety of fashion and textiles manufacturing processes and utilise these findings to inform and develop their own technical practice.

  5. Develop conceptual and aesthetic awareness of design relevant to the field of fashion and textiles and simultaneously acknowledge and empathise with the broader aspects of contemporary design culture.
