Film Practice 1: Documentary

Description

A thorough introduction to the imaginative process in relation to the creation and craft of the visual narrative, with emphasis on the student's engagement with the world about them.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Formulate a detailed knowledge and understanding of the visual narrative in terms of observation and communication through the documentary format.

  2. Develop an understanding of the structures of documentary production.

  3. Display a detailed knowledge of the various documentary narrative formats.

  4. Identify the importance of trust and ethics in relation to documentary production.

  5. Exhibit detailed knowledge of the mental geography of the frame, in relation to imagination, curiosity, observation and form.

  6. Display skills in creating a working storyboard with emphasis on narrative structure, shot association and spatial energy.

  7. Demonstrate basic camera/lighting skills with emphasis on lighting techniques for interviews.

  8. Develop skills in the area of observational documentary production.

  9. Implement the skills required to effect a professional interview in the areas of concept, research and production.

  10. Recognise the personal skills required in sharing and working in the collective environment of production.

  11. Demonstrate and display a detailed knowledge required to produce a short professional documentary- from initial concept, through production to screening.
