Forensic DNA 1

Description

Introductory module on DNA biology incorporating DNA isolation, manipulation, electrophoresis and analysis from the perspective of molecular forensics.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the structure of and replication of DNA.

  2. Recognise the major variable sequence segments that exist within genomic DNA.

  3. Prepare DNA from simulated forensic samples.

  4. Describe different DNA extraction methodologies and techniques.

  5. Discuss the merits and limitations associated with different sources of DNA (e.g. mitochondrial and genomic DNA).

  6. Perform a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping assay.

  7. Use PCR and capillary/gel electrophoresis equipment to amplify and separate DNA fragments.

  8. Interpret banding patterns/electropherograms using image analysis software.
