Geographic Information Systems in Applied Freshwater and Marine Biology

Description

This course provides an overview of the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the marine and freshwater environment and uses practical exercises with real data to develop core GIS skills, coupled with critical thinking and interpretation of outputs.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe elements of a GIS and the application of GIS in marine and freshwater environments

  2. Demonstration of practical GIS skills- data acquisition, management, manipulation and analysis, presentation and output

  3. Provide evidence of ability to exercise judgement in capturing and selecting appropriate data (including online repositories and resources), analysis techniques and interpretation and presentation of results

  4. Demonstrate an ability to direct their own learning in the practical applications of GIS in marine and freshwater projects
