Geotechnical Engineering

Description

This module builds on CIVE07084 Geomechanics and Ground Construction Technology. The module includes some additional
geomechanics theory and basic geotechnical design.  The learner will develop a cognisant of risks associated with groundwork along with developing awareness for the complexity of geotechnical engineering and its impact on the overall delivery of a civil engineering project.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Carry out and interpret the most common soil tests on collected samples from a trial pit or borehole investigation.

  2. Estimate soil permeability and construct flow nets to calculate flowrates and pore pressures in seepage problems

  3. Comprehend shear strength of soils, 1-D Consolidation and settlement

  4. Carry out basic geotechnical design (e.g. shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls and slope stability)
