History and Philosophy of Science

Description

The learner will acquire an overview of the main developments in the history of science and be able to evaluate the function and limitations of science in modern society.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Assess the nature and scope of the philosophy of science and its relation to other disciplines.

  2. Discuss  the major historical developments in the history of science, scientific method, worldviews and the philosophy of science.

  3. Debate and distinguish between science and pseudo-science.

  4. Analyse arguments in terms of logical validity and possible logical fallacies.

  5. Apply a questioning attitude to the assumptions – overt and covert – underlying modern science, technology and culture.

  6. Re-evaluate his/her personal worldview and develop a coherent Weltanschauung.
