History of Western Architecture

Description

This module is an introduction to Western architecture examining the style, spatial qualities and structural components of key buildings and urban forms from Ancient Egypt to present day. It also examines long used design and construction techniques that today are considered sustainable, such as durable materials, passive design, and water conservation methods.Students will explore basic shelter and environmental implications and connect sustainability within the historical narrative.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe key buildings and identify significant moments in architectural history and the works of key architects from Ancient Egypt to the present day.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of architectural design and technology and the relationship between them.

  3. Reflect on sustainable development and the natural environment.in the context of historical buildings and places

  4. Express awareness of social, community and ethical issues.

  5. Produce a selection of free hand sketches to describe and differentiate between the different historic styles
