Introduction to Social Care

Description

This module seeks to introduce the student to the theory and practice of social care. It will serve as the core framing module for the Higher Certificate in Applied Social Studies. The module will attempt to provide the student with an initial orientation to contemporary social care and offer the student an initial grounding understanding of the profession which will underline all the other modules. It is expected that themes introduced in this module will be picked up in other modules for more detailed treatment.

Learning Outcomes

  1. ·         social care as a theory and practice;

  2. ·         the domains of practice of the contemporary social care worker inIreland;

  3. ·         the various institutional, legal and political contexts within which social care is practiced inIreland;

  4. ·         contemporary models and concepts of social care in selected other European States;

  5. ·         the concepts of professionalism, professional ethics, person-centred care and personal boundaries as applied to social care practice.
