How to apply for entry into Year 2 of our courses

Progression for holders of Advanced FETAC Awards

Application Procedure for advanced entry to Year 2 of the following GMIT Letterfrack Programmes:

• BSc in Furniture Design and Manufacture
• BSc in Furniture and Wood Technology

GMIT Letterfrack welcomes applications from holders of a pass FETAC Level 6 Award in specialised and related areas of study in furniture design, making and/or conservation and from holders of the National Craft Certificate/FETAC Level 6 Advanced Certificate in the trades of Cabinetmaking and Carpentry and Joinery for direct entry to Year 2 of these Level 7 Degrees.

Qualified applicants can apply using the Direct Applications Form, found by double clicking the link below. Applicants currently enrolled in a L6 award may apply but must produce evidence of completion before being offered a place through this process.

Along with the application form, an accompanying letter setting out your reasons for wishing to undertake the programme must be included, outlining your previous qualifications, experience and interest in applying for a programme at GMIT Letterfrack. Given the demand for places, a selection process will be used, where applicants will be called for interview to Letterfrack in May and undertake a skills based, speed and accuracy making assignment will also be undertaken (Note: tools will not be provided as applicants are required to supply their own). Applicants must achieve a pass grade in this skills test in order to be eligible to enter Year 2 of a programme.

The weighting applied to the interview is 50% and to the skills test is 50% and the subsequent marks are used to rank applicants in order of merit. The interview will assess each applicant’s previous education, work experience, range and quality of previous work made and allow applicants to demonstrate their ability and competence to undertake the programme. Offers will be made to successful candidates subject to places being available in their programme of choice.

Students successful in completing a Level 7 Degree can progress to an Honours Degree Level 8 in Furniture Design and Manufacture or Furniture & Wood Technology.
