Certificate in Building Digital Healthcare Communities SPRINGBOARD+

This 30 credit, Level 8, Special Purpose Award is delivered online over two semesters commencing in September 2021 (subject to Springboard approval)

Why Study?: 

The programme is for anyone interested in using digital technologies as a catalyst toward improved healthcare.

Students will be introduced to the concepts, strategies, technologies and standards, which will drive the proposed electronic health care (eHealth) initiative in Ireland.

The aim is to provide students with an understanding of the underlying strategies and technical elements involved in eHealth, and to enable these students to take a leadership role in the implementation of an eHealth environment.

The focus will be on that aspect of the overall eHealth Ireland strategy which sees healthcare moving from the acute hospitals into community setting; the so-called Stay Left Shift Left strategy.

The programme seeks to give a grounding in ehealth strategy, systems, and processes to people involved in community and remote healthcare scenarios, and enable them to formulate plans for promoting, monitoring and facilitating healthcare delivery through digital technologies.

The programme is aimed at community healthcare workers, from the public, private and the voluntary sectors, who are interested in using digital technologies as a catalyst toward improved healthcare delivery. Moreover, the programme will also be of benefit to solutions providers and developers as they engage with the concept of digital healthcare ecosystems.

Programme Modules: 

eHealth Systems & Implementation: (5 Credits) (Semester 1)

  4. Change management in health care environments
  5. ICT project management

eHealth Strategy & Data: (5 Credits) (semester 1)

  1. Data concepts
  2. Healthcare data sources, data presentation
  3. Data collection activities, coding and standards
  4. Data safeguarding, legal and ethical responsibilities
  5. eHealth strategy
  6. Case studies – ongoing strategic eHealth initiatives

Telehealth Technologies: (10 Credits) (Semester 2)

  1. Telehealth-monitoring/diagnostic-system components
  2. Telehealth devices
  3. Health and wellness apps
  4. Cybersecurity safeguarding
  5. Healthcare analytics

The Digital Healthcare Community: (10 Credits) (Semester 2)

  1. Digital media and society
  2. Understanding the digital community lifecycle
  3. Digitally integrated care, systems, pillars and processes
  4. Ethics and legal Issues for digital healthcare communities
  5. Quality, patient safety, risk

Learning Outcomes: 

The learner is expected to have a detailed knowledge and understanding of:

  • the core elements of the electronic Health (eHealth) strategy
  • the underlying Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) being implemented specifically in the Irish context
  • the underlying Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) being implemented more generally at EU and global levels

Entry Requirements: 

Candidates must meet the minimum requirements for entry to a Level 8 programme in line with GMIT admissions policy.

Other Essential Information: 

The programme is delivered online over two consecutive semesters, a total of 26 weeks.

Student engagement will be primarily through the GMIT online learning environment where the content will be delivered through online video/slide presentations, documents, two-way discussions/tutorials and interactive practicals.

This programme is delivered entirely online. The participants will engage with a suite online learning resources delivered using synchronous and asynchronous modes of delivery as required.

Lecture notes, video materials, live weekly tutorial sessions, blogs, chats, online messaging, e-tivities, and webinars will form aspects of the delivery approach.

As this is a part-time programme it is recognised that potential students will come from diverse healthcare settings, and as such will bring their own unique experiences and challenges to the learning environment.

In this context, online class discussions/blogs around digital health/eHealth implementations, telehealth technologies and systems and existing and emerging digital communities will be very much encouraged to facilitate a shared learning experience.

As the area of eHealth and telehealth continues to evolve, case studies detailing areas of best practice will be employed with guest lecturers contributing in their specific areas of expertis.

Springboard+ Fees - FREE for those classified as unemployed.

The Springboard+ Fee for employed participants is €300.

Free to unemployed recipients (e.g. job-seekers, carers, one-parent families, etc.). Please see for full list.

For employed participants on courses of NFQ Level 7, 8 or 9, 90% of the course fee is paid by the HEA.

Participants will be liable for the remaining 10% fee.

Fees will be due once a place has been accepted.
